At The Root of This Longing

In the Christian church, the place of women in leadership has often been discussed in light of ancient and modern views. Carol Lee Flinders in her book, "At The Root of This Longing" addresses questions such as, "Can you be a feminist and lead a spiritually fulfilling life in today's world?" Does your yearning for spiritual connection often feel caught in a tug-of-war with your desire to be strong, independent, and equally valued?"

We encourage your dialog on this important topic. Here are questions and comments from Chapter One.

1. The popular image of woman has so much to do with Eve and her characterization as the archetypical temptress, the source of all the suffering in the world" (page 19, first paragraph).

2. To be a woman was to be devious, frivolous, sensual, and intellectually deficient" (page 19, first paragraph).

Although there are many fine women in our church (and I have served under and been served wonderfullyby a few in the past) I do not think God intended them to be leaders in our church, definitely NOT over men. I also believe that its an issue that should not divide us as Christians either.

I think the fact that our lead pastor allowed people to leave the church over this....a sign of indifference toward others. Jesus never lost any and neither should we!

Before addressing the question "Can you be a feminist and lead a spiritually fulfilling life in today's world?", it might be helpful to know exactly what Flinders means when she uses the label "feminist".

After all, following onto your blog post about "Evangelical", it's good to define our terminology before going forward.
